Alex Karev was one of the central characters of Grey’s Anatomy who was among the first set of interns in the show. He was seen to marry twice, first to Izzie Stevens and then to Jo Wilson. He had a series of bad relationships in between but he was totally in love and committed to both of them. When Izzie left the show in season 6, Alex was heartbroken.
When he finally moved on and fell in love with Jo, fans were overjoyed for him. But much to the dismay of fans, Alex left the show in season 16 and his character arc had him ending up with Izzie again. While some fans were glad that Alex had found his way back to Izzie, some fans were immensely disappointed that he had left Jo. They all believe that she had been a better match for him.
Jo: Always Stuck By Him
One of the things fans of Jo admired was how devoted she was to her loved ones. When Alex was seen to be going through some dark times, Jo did her best to help him through it all. From his father’s death, Meredith’s attack, to the reunion with his mother, Jo made sure that Alex knew he could rely on her.
She may have kept her distance at times, but she was always there for him. At no point did she ever randomly walk away from him.
Izzie: Left Him For Years
Izzie just disappeared and left Alex heartbroken once she was fired from the hospital. However, no one could understand how she could do this. Through Izzie’s diagnosis, treatment, and after, Alex was completely committed to Izzie. He was always there, taking care of her.
Even after she came back to work, he was making sure that she was taking her meds or getting enough rest. In spite of all of this, Izzie just left him with a “Dear John” letter and avoided all his calls. Alex deserved better than that.
Jo: Understands Alex And Loves Him Unconditionally
Jo really understood Alex, where he came from, and why he was the way he was. She loved him for his flaws, for the ways in which he tried to be better, and for the ways in which he made himself better for her.
Even when she was going through a tough time and tried pushing him away. she really did appreciate that he was willing to help her through. From beginning to end, fans could see that she loved Alex unconditionally.
Izzie: Fell In Love With Denny
After Izzie and Alex go through a bit of a rough patch, Izzie falls in love with a patient named Denny Duquette. They even get engaged before he dies. Izzie’s love for Denny was very intense and she went to great lengths that were quite unethical to help him. This shows that she was clearly that passionate about someone else even when Alex was around.
Jo: Was In Love With Alex Through And Through
Once Jo and Alex started dating, she was seen to only have eyes for him. She was still even in love with him after the whole DeLuca debacle. Despite DeLuca and Levi expressing a romantic interest in her, Jo made it abundantly clear that she didn’t reciprocate their feelings.
No one would have even blamed her if she wanted to try and move on. However, it seemed that she would rather work on their issues than start afresh. It just proves how committed she was to him.
Izzie: Easily Jumped To Conclusions
Another reason why Alex and Izzie’s relationship was doomed was because of the lack of trust. As fans remember, Izzie assumes that Alex had complained about her to the Chief, which ultimately led to her getting fired from the hospital. Not only was this false but she never bothered to confirm her assumptions and just up and left him.
This showed the fans that she didn’t trust Alex as much as they thought she did. After everything he did for her, from the LVAD wire to her recovery, she should have known she had Alex’s loyalty by now. They had only been married five minutes and she was already willing to walk when trouble arose.
Jo: Was Patient With Alex
Jo understood Alex’s mood swings. She knew that if he was being distant and cranky, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for it. And she stuck around patiently to hear it. She of course demanded that she be treated well, but she understood that Alex took some time to deal with things and was understanding and patient with him.
And he returned the favor as well. They were both willing to deal with each other because they knew that the other person would still be there for them no matter what.
Izzie: Wanted To Fix Alex
Izzie wanted to straighten up Alex’s rough edges. She took it upon herself to make him more decent and nice. And she succeeded in many ways as well. But any relationship wherein one person undertook such a task to “fix” someone is always a very problematic one. While Izzie knew that there was a good person buried in Alex, she wanted him to quickly change for her.
Jo: Made Alex Want To Fix Himself
Jo loved Alex the way he was and this is what made Alex want to make himself better for her. He had already gone through hell before arriving at Jo and had grown up considerably.
But he knew that he loved her and wanted to be with her, so he just fixed himself in the process. They were both incredibly good for each other in that way.
Izzie: Trust Issues?
When Alex found out that Izzie had his kids, Alex immediately left so that he can be with them and have the family that he always wanted. However, this was what fans had many issues with.
Izzie knew how much Alex valued family so why did she wait 5 years to tell him he had kids? Why didn’t she try to reach out earlier instead of keeping their twins a secret? Most fans feel like this isn’t something Jo would do.
