That boom heard at the end of the Grey’s Anatomy season finale may spell doom for Link.
As the episode came to a close, the operating room floor of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital exploded after the distressed mother of a young patient brought in a highly flammable tank to use as leverage in a hostage situation. She thought the tank was empty, but it was actually leaking the whole time. So just when the mom was arrested and everything appeared to be going back to normal, the OR exploded in flames, putting every doctor’s life – minus Meredith and Ben, who were outside the hospital – in jeopardy. Link’s fate, in particular, is very concerning seeing as how he was physically in the OR at the time of the blast.
In a new interview with E! News, Camilla Luddington, who plays Link’s new bride Jo, called the upcoming Season 22 premiere a “really rough” episode for her character. Uh oh, does that mean her hubby is a goner? Of course, it’s possible that there’s another death that affects all the characters or that Jo is dealing with a difficult patient. But Link dying would definitely have the most impact specifically on Jo.
Whatever happens in the hour, it was enough to make Luddington apprehensive about returning to work. “There are some premieres that I’m excited to come back and film,” the actress said. “We’ve had some really funny openers and this one, I think I can say this, I was really dreading.”
She went on to share that while “the finale was crazy, our premiere is even crazier. There is so much going on.”
“I don’t even know how they’re gonna film it in regular filming days, like this should be a three-week movie,” Luddington added. “It’s wild. There’s so much going on. There’s so much action nonstop. I think viewers are gonna be really excited to watch, but also like, there’s some hard moments.”
Luddington’s on-screen partner, Chris Carmack (aka Link), was cagey about his future with the hit ABC drama during a June interview with Women’s World.
“We left Season 21 on a precarious note, especially for my character,” Carmack noted . “I don’t know what I can share because I don’t know anything yet. The writers are working on Season 22, and the show has been picked up.”
And this is where things get worrisome: “Wait-now that I think about it, I haven’t gotten the call yet saying, ‘See ya in July,’” the actor added.
Grey’s showrunner Meg Marinis told our sister site Deadline that “with an ending like this, someone might not come back.”
Link and Jo recently wed and learned that they are expecting twins, so his death would certainly be shocking and tragic, which are two adjectives Grey’s Anatomy has never shied away from. But would the series put Jo through another heartbreak after what she went through with ex-husband Alex? Marinis noted that “everybody is up for grabs,” so there is the possibility that someone else will be victim to the explosion, even though Link was closest to it. Or maybe the outcome will be far more dire, and he won’t be the only fatality?
